Be Cool

That’s what I was thinking to myself after a good-sized wave caught me off guard.

The wave had picked me up and deposited me firmly on my left foot.  The knee went left, the rest of me went right.  As I gathered my thoughts (like, “Did I just get Wes Welkered?“), the next wave did the same thing.  And this time, my left kneecap popped.  I reached down and felt it to the left of where it should be.  Not sure what to do, I pushed it back into place.  Where it stayed.

Surf's up at Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico.

Quite pleased with that impromptu procedure, I managed to work my way back to shore, not quite knowing if I would be able to walk out or have to drag myself out and lie there like a beached whale.

I walked out.  And I walked back to the place we were staying.  And after briefly explaining to my wife and the couple we were with exactly what happened, I kept walking.  Right to the bar at the pool.

Tuesday morning, I’ll keep walking.  Into the office of my orthopedic surgeon.  I feel pretty good.  But just in case, I’m full of Advil and have a package of frozen green beans on my knee.

Lucky?  Yup.

Will I take the plunge again?  Well…boys will be boys.

UPDATE:  It doesn’t look like surgery is needed.  But I am wearing a brace the size of a bumper on a ’53 Buick for the time being.

I can’t believe I did the same thing playing miniature golf in high school… here’s to a quick recovery for ya, Gerry.

  2. Oh Gerry, I am so sorry to hear what has happened to you. Yet for some reason I am laughing due to it has happened to me. but I wasn’t able to ‘pop’ my knee back. I ended up just ‘dragging’ my leg.

I was at the Cheshire Lights of Hope last weekend. I was so excited on Saturday, even though it was a bit chilly. I was so happy to be there and that I was doing something good. I was going to lay down the luminaries that I had made the previous weekend. I had gotten another hug from Dr. Petit, I was thilled! People were taking videos, people were taking interviews.

It came time for me to get my boxes! Wow boxes and boxes of luminaries to put on the shoulder of the road. I could do this, nothing to it. I got four down whoopee lots more to go! Oh oh,, one of the candles is on it’s side, I better straigthen that up when I get a lighter to light it.

Then I heard myself say “Oh no, oh no oh no” then a shriek came out of my mouth. The ‘oh no’s’ were nice and quiet for nobody else to hear not sure why.

There I was in the road, luckily on the shoulder, had I gone another 4 inches I think a car would have found part of my body and the shriek would have been worse.

So, two wonderful young ladies come to see if I’m ok. I had to think what to say not to worry them. So, the only thing I could say was “My knee hurts” and of course they ask which one? Why did they have to do that??? I can’t lie, it was both of them (have to explain here also I walk with a walker due to having M.S. I didn’t use the walker to lay the luminaries down because it’s a new walker and bigger than the one I was used to).

Ok, I’m laying sitting up in the road now – some man was behind me – his legs either pushing my back up or keeping me up,,, I’m not quite sure – nor did I get a look at him. The police car that was following the truck that was bringing us the boxes is now backing up – not sure why on that either. Then somebody had called the man who was running part of this and Dr. Petit was with him. Dr. Petit comes out to me and asked me if I was ok, and I told him I was sorry I fell. He just hugged me told me I’d be ok and he’d pray for me. I told him I’d pray for him too.

As it turned out, I was at the hospital (I won’t mention what one though, but I really don’t like them at all. I had to ask for them to wipe off the blood that was on my knee when they were discharging me, and I kept telling them that the x-ray tech is a sumo wrestler who pulled some muscles that didn’t hurt when I got into the hospital. The
Dr. told me not to worry the Percocets will take care of it.), luckily nothing was broken ‘except soft tissue’ ok, that is a new one on me. They took x-rays of both knees told me to call my regular orthopedist and have a good night.

I get to see my wonderful Orthopedist who jinxed me a few months ago when he said I really won’t have to see you until the end of the new year. Yeah ok. I have learned to keep an ice pack as well as frozen veggies in the freezer just in case I hurt more than one part of my body. I have only five bruises on my body right now. Yeah.

Again, I’m very sorry for you getting hurt and I hope your Orthopedist takes great care of you!

Green beans are ok. Bagged peas (le sueur, if available) are better. But, take it from me, a two-pound sack of frozen niblet corn cannot be beat. It just fits better.

And, like the beans and peas, “It’s the therapy you can eat!”

  4. Rick D says:

Gerry, Cowboy up!! A hurt knee in Mexico is better than anything in January in CT. Take two Cabo Wabos and call someone in the morning.

  5. Linda says:

Gerry – you’re the coolest. Good luck at the doctor’s. Don’t want to miss out on your next great adventure.

    Beats stepping on two nails!

  7. RJM says:

YOU POOR THING!! TG you made it to the bar, that always helps! Good Luck.

  8. Peter N says:

Welcome home, one and one half knees or two. I hope you feel better…quickly. I’ll look for any signs of a limp if you’re doing the news tonight (I was going to say knees, not news…not). WELCOME HOME.

  9. Coulda been worse. This could have happened at that nude beach last year. Knees are one thing, well, two things actually…

    I better stop there.
