When I Grow Up…

My nephew is a freshman in high school.  Apparently, the freshmen have to tell their guidance counselors what they want to do with their lives.

He doesn’t know.  And why should he?

I didn’t have a clue until I thumbed through the course catalogue at UMass, saw “Communications Studies,” and thought “that looks easy.”

Anyway, this led to a spirited discussion (fueled by spirits) about what he should tell his guidance counselor.

Somehow we worked our way to goat herder, when the obvious struck my brother and me at the same time.

Me:  “Tell him you want to be a fireman.”

My brother:  “Astronaut.”

Both of us:  “President of the United States.”

Some things never change.

The one job I wish my guidance counselor told me about: Sports Illustrated swimsuit model body painter.

  2. Mary says:

Goodness doesn’t he have a mother who could help him with his homework, you 2 are scary, although a little redemption with the tried and true professions.

That’s funny I was having the same conversation with my 4 year old.
He wants to be a NAVY SEAL like my brother. What you don’t want to be a Chef like mommy? Nope, SEALS get the Chicks!…..Nice. and he’s only4!

A Navy Seal? …..be still my heart! Have you read the books by Suzanne Brockmann? They are centered around Navy Seals and, oh my. If fiction could be true! But a Chef is good too. Louisa Edwards writes great fiction in that field. I want to join your family! You are my fantasy life! Thank goodness I work in a library and can indulge my fantasy through books!

      • Melissa says:

Fantasy life no not really. I’m just a Mom who happens to be a chef and when I’m not at work cooking an cleaning I’m home cooking and cleaning. But if you want to join the Fam your more than welcome I make a fantastic Cheesecake.

    • Gerry says:

I dunno. I’m thinking chicks dig chefs even more. He’ll learn.

I remember reading years ago that even a college freshman (or anyone at age 18) had no way of deciding what they should do with their lives for the next 40 to 50 years. You have to try something that you enjoy and try to make a living at it. And with the warp speed changes in today’s world the likelihood is that today’s freshman will change careers many times and even do things we don’t even know about now.

  5. The girl on the SI cover is from the former Soviet Union. Kinda gives whole new meaning to ” The Russians Are Coming.”

I forget. Is the principal’s office on the first or second floor?

Re: career choices. It took me two colleges and a four year tour in the Air Force before I decided to major in English/journalism at Umass. Didn’t get my degree til I was an ancient 29. I made the right choice. Better late than…

When my daughter was born, the last thing I remember the anesthesiologist saying to me is “You could be having the next president of the United States!” and my reply to her was “Oh God, I hope not!”
(I was given magnesium sulfate — kind of like being under the influence of many cocktails — and because of other issues, had to be under general anesthesia. We also didn’t know if the baby was a boy or girl, not that it really mattered.)
