The Spirit of the Season

I enjoy saying “Merry Christmas.”

Nothing against “Happy Chanukah,” “Happy Birthday,” or all the other “Happy” salutations.  But there’s something inherently joyful in the simple sound of “Merry Christmas.”

It’s the only holiday that we wish others to be “merry.”  And “Christmas” is a mellifluous complement to “Merry.”

In my world, “Merry Christmas” has no religious connotation.  It’s an acknowledgment of a season and a spirit.

So whoever you are and whatever you celebrate, “Merry Christmas.”

Growing up I always thought is was my holiday, spelling meant nothing to me, and I think I’ll keep it that way……… Merry Christmas to the Brooks family and his NBC family as well.

I’m with you on this…am so tired of the PC “happy holidays.” So Merry Christmas to you and your family and friends.

  5. It does feel good to say, ” Merry Christmas ” to folks one encounters this time of year. I say it. They say it back. I don’t know if they’re Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu. They don’t know what I am. I slip every now and then and write ” Happy Holidays. ” But ” Merry Christmas ” is what I say. Just feels right.

    Merry Christmas, Gerry.

I enjoy a hearty “Merry Christmas” but I also find myself saying “Happy Holidays” a lot more these days because (to me) by using it I’m wishing happiness through the whole season.
Merry Christmas Gerry and I’m glad I found your blog!
