Dancing With The…What?

The word “star” has been co-opted over the years into something as unrecognizable as Jennifer Grey’s face.

Star begat superstar, and when super wasn’t enough for some, mega stepped up to the plate.

So maybe star has been relegated so far to the back of the bus that the people who will star on “Dancing With The Stars” really do qualify as stars now.

Jennifer Grey will be on DWTS.  She was once a budding star, who chose to rearrange her face, and subsequently departed our public consciousness.

"Baby," then and now.

And Bristol Palin will be on DWTS.  She radiates in her mother’s stardom, while her sole apparent qualification for stardom is getting knocked up by a ne’er do well who also has star qualifications by today’s meager standards.

Sly and the Family Stone saw this coming 40 years ago.

About Gerry

I've been covering Connecticut news and sports since 1974. I know, I don't look that old.

That opening sentence is the best sentence EVER! Do you know how many wanna be authors would kill for an opening sentence like that? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’ve got to write a book, Gerry.

  2. Beckie says:

Jennifer Gray has been professionally trained as a dancer. Her father is Joel Gray, for goodness sake! How does that make the “competition” fair? I had the same thought when Joey Fatone was on it. (The last season I watched.)
And Bristol Palin? You’re description is on the money. She’s SO not a “star” I want my child emulating. While they’re at it, why not add Paris Hilton, any of the Kardashians and Jesse James to the roster?
Last season, I don’t think I recognized any of the “stars.”

  3. Barely a footnote to this story: former mega star- and longtime CT resident- Michael Bolton is also on DWTS.
    What happened to him?!

  4. Graham says:

Well, here’s another show I won’t be watching. I’ve enjoyed some of the past seasons where we watched non-dancers become very good dancers. This year’s selections have just completely turned me off. By watching I’d feel as though I agreed with the producers that these people deserve my time and I just cannot do that.
    Back to the re-run networks………

  5. Mary says:

Gerry have you ever considered a Connecticut DWTS, might just turn into reality tv. Those no name peeps have nothing on you.

    • Gerry says:

Actually, Mary, a local charity did this at one of the casinos. We were more than capably represented by Mr. Brad Drazen. He’s a big boy, but light on his feet.

  6. Kathy says:

All I know is that Sly and The Family Stone ALBUM, always got people dancing at parties at UMASS in the early 70’s. But I digress…

  7. Cat says:

Seems like it will be a boring DWTS this time around…
I will root for “baby” however.
    Gerry, on another note,
I love seeing the snapshots of the little kids going off to school, but…..
Does the station really think its a good idea putting up the names of where these children attend?
With all that goes on in this world today, I was just surprised to see this being done.

  8. Cat says:

    Still kind of scary……..

  9. Jean says:

Gerry, you’ve got to give props to the Kinks, too, for their cult classic “Everybody’s a Star”:

This tune is relevant to the conversation
