No Man is an Island

But if you invented the Segway, you can own one.

I’ve been fascinated by the private island we dropped anchor near while on a friend’s boat last weekend.  It turns out it’s called North Dumpling Island, just off Fishers Island, and it’s owned by Dean Kamen of Segway fame.

Kamen’s quite a character.  He declared he was seceding from the union after he was denied permission to build a wind turbine.  He not only eventually got it built, he lights the house and outbuildings with LEDs, and calls his island “LED Nation.”

Maybe next time he’ll have us in if we bring a good bottle of wine.  Or maybe a nice casserole.

I remember seeing something about him. He is a very facinating man! I would love to go and visit there. The picture that you have looks so calming and relaxing!

I have been! It was years ago, before Dean Kamen bought the island. The caretakers were my weather watchers.

It’s spacious and quite nice with its own navigation light and very loud fog horn. When you need provisions you boat into Niantic.

Though Kamen is quite a character he is much more. Please watch this video:

More power to him! (no pun intended)

When you apply for a visa to land there, you must state where you were conceived…
