Mr. Roberts

“…he is one of the best human beings you’ll ever meet.”  (Nick Cafardo, Boston Globe)

The Globe’s veteran Red Sox reporter is referring to Dave Roberts.  You remember Dave.  A west coast guy who came east for a cup of coffee with the Red Sox in 2004.  He stole a base and stole our hearts.  And then he went back home.

The Stolen Base.

10 days later...

Now Dave Roberts, just 37 years old, has cancer.  His spirits are high, and he calls his prognosis “very positive.”

Cafardo says he’s been inundated with requests from Red Sox fans who want to send Roberts a message.  If you’re interested in wishing Dave Roberts well (or just a baseball fan who appreciates a good guy), here are the addresses he got: or you can send an old-fashioned get well card to: Dave Roberts, San Diego Padres, Petco Park, 100 Park Blvd., San Diego, Ca. 92101.

I did.

Some very thought provoking posts lately Gerry. Referring first to the post concerning Pandora Radio. I think you summarized it very well when you said that it has a Motown station, but lacks soul.
Continuing on to your post concerning the latest terrorist attack in New York, you pose the question….do you know your neighbors? Which gave me a moment to pause and answer quite honestly no, not very well. Without seeming judgmental, because I am one of the guilty ones, I spend more time conversing with people on-line rather than face-to-face.
I wonder, as an ever evolving species…….if we are becoming a soul-less society? But then you posted this!

I read about Mr. Roberts in the newspaper yesterday. Our office is split down the middle between Red Sox and Yankee fans. My family is originally from Somerville, MA so you know where I stand. Our office sent a card. No one can forget the ’04 Series no matter who one was cheering for. We are all cheering for Mr. Roberts. Thank you very much for the addresses. You are a very kind man. We wish Mr. Roberts a complete recovery!

    Thank you!

I used to know Somerville quite well! Nice job by the folks in your office. Wishing Dave Roberts well transcends any rivalry.
