Juiced…on Jesus

Grant Desme

Great sports stories coming out of the weekend.  The Super Bowl matchup is set.  (I’m a big Peyton Manning fan, and it’s hard to root against Dwight Freeney and Donald Brown, but did a city ever deserve a championship more than New Orleans?)

The UConn men finally turned up the volume in front of a national television audience.  And the women…well…as Maya Moore told the Courant’s John Altavilla, “Every time you are on the floor, you have an opportunity to make beautiful basketball.”  And they are.

But my favorite sports story of the past week was that of Grant Desme.  While Mark McGwire has the audacity to claim that steroids didn’t help his power game, the power hitting Oakland A’s prospect told general manager Billy (“Moneyball”) Beane that he’s quitting baseball.

For the priesthood.

And he’s not the first.

You know, I really like the way Pope and General Manager Benedict XVI is putting us Catholics back in the game. Maybe sometime in the next year or so we can finally derail that perennial baseball juggernaut and long-time rival, The House of David.

    PLAY BALL!!
