Ink & Paper

Richard WellingI turned to the obituary page this morning to find that Hartford had lost a champion.

His name was Richard Welling.

4c1ceb6709a03cde9f324110.L._SL500_AA240_Richard Welling drew buildings, especially buildings in Hartford.  It wasn’t very long ago that it seemed nearly every office in Greater Hartford had a “Welling” hanging on a wall.

I was lucky enough to meet this fascinating man, and if you’d like to “meet” him, or learn how much he cared about Hartford and its architecture, take a few moments to read this 1992 story on him in the New York Times.

About Gerry

I've been covering Connecticut news and sports since 1974. I know, I don't look that old.

  1. Sad news. Welling was like Bob Steele: a Hartford institution. His passing is like the Traveler’s Tower collapsing. Hard to imagine The Insurance city without him.

  2. ” Kind of ” says it all. Hope the Courant has an appreciation on its pages tomorrow. But don’t hold your breath.
