Is this something new in newspaper design?  Was it cocktail hour at the Courant?

UPDATE (from one who knows): 

… the ad folks are behind it. It’s supposed to represent steam rising from the coffee in the lower right hand corner. I didn’t get it. You didn’t get it. I’ll bet the guy who came up with the idea didn’t get it either.

The layout people are usually pretty good. I’m sure they protested, but were over ruled.

  3. When I first saw that, before I read your explanation, I thought: That’s the kind of newspaper page an ad man/woman might create. Bingo. Back in the days when I was a reporter there was a thick line between news and advertising. Looks like that line has been erased. Not a good idea.

    Newspapers in general can’t afford to leave open space like that. I’m surprised they did this.
