Rock ‘N Roll Incongruity

I like to look at the ads to see who’s coming to perform at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods.

I don’t go, mind you.  I just look at the ads, and consider that not too long ago, some of the biggest names in show business would have been playing in the middle of eastern Connecticut forest.

And then I saw this ad for the MGM Grand.  Let me repeat that.  THE MGM GRAND.

Woodstock%20hero

“The Heroes of Woodstock”…40 years later.   Playing the MGM Grand.

Hosted by Country Joe McDonald himself, whose “I Feel Like I’m Fixing To Die Rag” was an anti-war anthem back in the day.

And it’s one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it’s five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Maybe so, Joe, but not until after you…as the MGM Grand web site puts it… “enjoy 300 thread count Monaco imported linens adorning feather-pillow topped beds that envelop you in a warm caress of blissful comfort.”

Well, that’s one route to the pearly gates, I suppose.

Hey, times and people change.

Yeah, Woodstock and MGM Grand… not a good match. I’m sure the seats will all be filled by veterans/survivors of Woodstock! (Yeah, right!) But you’ve got to wonder why these performers would so violate what made them famous. Oh yeah, like you say, money, lots and lots of money. Sort of gives Country Joe’s “F” cheer a whole new meaning.

  3. Jackson Browne’s ” Casino Nation ” comes to mind. And Crosby, Stills, Nash and Not so Young anymore.

Sad in a way. But a band’s gotta do what a band’s gotta do. Times are hard.

  4. Lets bring in Elvis corpse as an opening act!

  5. Cathy says:

Then there could be “Starship performing music by Jefferson Starship performing Jefferson Airplane” Gets lost in the translation…
