IT’S ALL ABOUT THE NAME

What would you rather curl up in: a Snuggie, a Slanket, or a Freedom Blanket? I rest my case.
The Snuggie commercial continues the tradition of the Chia Pet and the Clapper. I’ve never even heard it (when I see it, I’m on the treadmill wearing headphones), but I really don’t have to. The pictures sell it. (And the answer [...]

I do hope this isn’t the Courant’s fate. Or the Register’s. Or the…
How sad.

It took 16 pages for the Courant to get around to reporting on its next giant step into the abyss. (That’s like placing a major story between weather and the commercial break in a newscast.) It was in the business section, because, after all, it’s business.
It was a “Courant Staff Report,” no byline. Cold. And was there was a gag [...]
CAUSE AND…EFFECT?
Posted in News, Noticed, People, Politics, tagged casinos, Jodi Rell on February 25, 2009 | 1 Comment »
The Courant headline: Rell Proposes 24-Hour Bar Service At State’s Casinos.
The quote that almost made me do a Danny Thomas spit-take over coffee:
When asked…if she had any misgivings about basing even a small part of her plan on people drinking more and gambling more, Rell said, “No. If it’s going to help us, it’ll be fine.”
OK [...]
CARVING UP THE COURANT

Another 100 layoffs, says publisher Steve Carver.
Among them: veteran political guy Mark Pazniokas, and Matt Eagan who (it seems) had been writing half the sports section. Two veterans who offer insight and analysis.
Duby McDowell’s blog has other links to the story here. And here’s a link to a web site called the Hartford Courant Alumni Association [...]

As you probably know, I’m as big a sports fan as anybody, with a Boston bent. (And I can hear all the New York fans saying, “Get bent,” that cute little insult we learned in grade school.)
But the last time I was at Fenway Park was 2005. (I didn’t pay for the tickets.) Before that, [...]
$1.6 MIL? PEANUTS!

So Jim Calhoun makes $1,600,000. You can debate whether he’s worth it all you want, but that’s big time college sports. That’s the route UConn has chosen to go, and Calhoun has delivered, whether he needs anger management counseling or not.
But you know, he could do even better. Especially if he became the head football coach at U.S.C., or [...]
CONAN QUOTABLES

Every week, the NBC Publicity Department puts out a list called “Quotables from Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” This is the final list. In honor of Conan’s departure from the program, I thought I’d pass them along.
“Earlier today New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez confirmed reports that he has taken steroids in the past. Officials aren’t [...]

The Philadelphia newspapers have joined the parent company of the New Haven Register in declaring bankruptcy.
Who and what will fill the void when (sadly, not “if”) hard copy newspapers go away?
That was the line of thinking behind the creation of the new web sites of the NBC-owned television stations. You know, the web site you probably [...]
