What a shame.  The Red Sox…in a pennant race…have to give up a future Hall of Famer.  It’s supposed to work the other way around, but we are, of course, talking about Manny Ramirez.
In Manny World, nothing is as it seems, and things can change at the drop of a pop-up to shallow left.
Manny wanted [...]

I was perusing the A.P. wires Wednesday when I came across this article on the death throes of jai alai.
It doesn’t seem like that long ago Connecticut jumped on the jai alai bandwagon, with shiny new frontons opened in Hartford, Bridgeport, and Milford, as well as Newport, Rhode Island.  In fact, it was 32 years [...]

Tuesday’s earthquake in Southern California reminded me of my earthquake in Southern California.  It was my earthquake because I just happened to be there.
It was the late ’80’s or early ’90’s.  My wife and I were staying at the Palos Verdes Inn when we felt the earth move, and you’d better believe I had a [...]

NITPICKING

I understand this doesn’t mean anything to most people.  I understand I’m a dinosaur when it comes to this sort of thing.  But still…when I read the caption under John Woike’s front page picture on today’s Courant…it made me kind of sad.
Ronald Klattenberg of Middletown uses an environmentally friendly paint for the bottom of his boat [...]

For the past ten years I have played in and emceed the American Lung Association’s fundraising golf tournament.
That enjoyable tradition continues today with one significant difference:  I won’t be looking for places (wooded areas, behind large trees, men’s rooms) to sneak a smoke.
Gerry, you smoked at the ALA golf tournament?
Well, yes I did.  Not that [...]

This weekend brings a 3-game series between the Red Sox and Yankees.  The Sox go into the weekend tied with the Rays for first, and the Yanks coming on strong, just 3 games back.
Mid-summer baseball…a big series…the hated rival…and I just can’t seem to get all that wrapped up in it.
Game one’s a good one, [...]

Pity the poor Connecticut River.  It’s on a losing streak.

First, it lost a major bass fishing tournament.  Now the ChampBoats F1 racing series has pulled its event scheduled for August 16th and 17th on the mighty Connecticut.
According to Riverfront Recapture, the event was being marketed as a “family friendly” day on the river.  The problem: the ChampBoats [...]

HONEST TO A FAULT

And apparently dumber than dirt.
He was a Marine who wanted to be a Connecticut state trooper.  Fair enough.
Until Jon Van Allen of Winsted admitted that he sexually molested a young girl… during the lie detector test to become a state trooper.
Really.  He thought they’d appreciate his honesty.  You cannot make this stuff up.  It’s stories like [...]

Just finished reading the paper, and two things struck me about Wednesday’s edition of the Courant.
If I read the paper online, I never would have seen Bill Petit’s tribute to his wife and daughters on the obituary page (page B6 in my edition).   In a 5×6 inch box, he exposed his soul on this first [...]

COWSILLS REDUX?

Because I am a plugged-in dude, I happen to know that the Jonas Brothers are performing at the Dodge Music Center on Saturday.
It will even be ”Jonas Brothers Day” in Hartford.  (Will Eddie Perez be in the front row wearing a “Nick’s my fave” button?)
But my favorite piece of Jonas Brothers news crossed the A.P. wire Tuesday night.  [...]
